Global AI Regulation Tracker · Jurisdiction overview
Western SaharaAI regulation
AI regulation status from the Global AI Regulation Tracker.
Regulation Status
- Western Sahara does not have specific AI regulations or a comprehensive data protection framework. The territory's disputed status and lack of international recognition as an independent state complicate the development of AI governance. Western Sahara is not explicitly mentioned in the African Union's Continental AI Strategy, which was endorsed in July 2024. Given that Morocco administers much of the territory, Moroccan data protection laws, such as Law No 09-08 from 2009, may have some influence in the region. However, the applicability and enforcement of these laws in Western Sahara remain unclear due to the ongoing political dispute.
