Regulation Status

• Mississippi has not enacted a comprehensive or risk-based AI statute and addresses artificial intelligence through narrow, targeted measures. SB 2577 is a political-deepfake statute that prohibits disseminating a “digitization”—an image or audio altered in a realistic manner constituting a deepfake—within 90 days of an election without the depicted individual's consent and with intent to injure a candidate, influence election results, or deter voting, subject to a disclaimer exception; penalties include imprisonment, injunctive relief, and fines up to $10,000.
• HB 1723 establishes a uniform statutory definition of artificial intelligence for Mississippi law, defining AI as a machine-based system that, for human-defined objectives, can make predictions, recommendations, or decisions influencing real or virtual environments and describing its use of machine- and human-based inputs, automated analysis, and model inference. The measure specifies no enforcement mechanism. Beyond these two measures, Mississippi has not passed automated-decision, transparency, or frontier-model legislation, and it has no omnibus AI governance framework.
