Regulation Status

• The District of Columbia has no comprehensive AI statute in force. Its most prominent legislative effort is the Stop Discrimination by Algorithms Act, first introduced in 2021 and reintroduced in the current Council, which would bar algorithmic eligibility determinations that discriminate on the basis of the traits protected by the DC Human Rights Act across areas such as employment, housing, credit, and public accommodations, and would add notice and auditing obligations; it has not yet been enacted.
• On government use, the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) maintains an AI/ML governance policy and the District has adopted a set of AI values and a strategic plan; agencies are directed to submit AI strategic plans and the District's AI task force is scheduled to sunset on 31 December 2026.
