Regulation Status

Uganda has no comprehensive, binding AI-specific law; activity centres on a taskforce, calls for legislation and a planned policy rather than enacted AI rules.
Uganda is moving toward AI governance through institutions and proposals: it launched a 10-member AI taskforce (2024) to develop a guiding concept note, and the Minister of ICT announced plans to draft a policy to regulate AI (2024).
Parliamentary leaders, notably Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, have repeatedly urged a dedicated AI law and stronger data-protection laws to address AI-driven data harvesting and processing risks (2024).
Uganda engages internationally, having hosted the ITU's Global Symposium for Regulators 2024 in Kampala, where regulators endorsed the GSR-24 Best Practice Guidelines covering AI.
