Regulation Status

• Sweden has no comprehensive standalone national AI statute beyond the EU AI Act; domestic activity centres on regulators and on sector measures such as a 2025 government bill to allow police real-time AI facial recognition to combat crime.
• As an EU member state, Sweden applies the EU AI Act; the Swedish Data Protection Authority (IMY/Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten) is being equipped for new market-surveillance duties under the Regulation, with a proposed 2026 budget increase to cover oversight including AI systems in law enforcement.
• Sweden is active in international and regional AI cooperation, joining a Nordic data protection authorities' declaration on children's data and AI (2024), the Nordic Council of Ministers' funding for a Nordic-Baltic AI Center (2025), a 20-authority joint statement on trustworthy data governance for AI (2025), and bilateral technology arrangements with India (SITAC corridor, 2026) and the US (Technology Prosperity Deal MoU, 2026).
• The Swedish DPA has issued GDPR-and-AI guidance, publishing guidelines on processing personal data in AI development and use (2024) and practical guidelines on responsible use of generative AI by public administrations and organisations (2025).
