- Sri Lanka has no comprehensive, binding AI-specific law in force; its national AI strategy remains in draft.
- Sri Lanka has been developing a national AI strategy, with the Ministry of Technology releasing a draft National AI Strategy ('AI Sri Lanka 2028') for public consultation in September 2024, focused on foundational enablers, accelerating AI utilization, and ensuring safe and trustworthy AI through iterative governance.
- An AI White Paper (2024) analysed challenges to AI rollout and called for a national strategy plus a legal and regulatory framework promoting innovation while ensuring safety and privacy; in May 2024 the President noted that research had been delayed by the absence of required AI regulation.
