Regulation Status

Sri Lanka has no comprehensive, binding AI-specific law in force; its national AI strategy remains in draft.
Sri Lanka has been developing a national AI strategy, with the Ministry of Technology releasing a draft National AI Strategy ('AI Sri Lanka 2028') for public consultation in September 2024, focused on foundational enablers, accelerating AI utilization, and ensuring safe and trustworthy AI through iterative governance.
An AI White Paper (2024) analysed challenges to AI rollout and called for a national strategy plus a legal and regulatory framework promoting innovation while ensuring safety and privacy; in May 2024 the President noted that research had been delayed by the absence of required AI regulation.
