Regulation Status

  • As an EU member state, Latvia applies the EU AI Act rather than a separate comprehensive national AI law, with implementation work and a national AI centre in progress.
  • Latvia has an early National AI Strategy (2020) aimed at promoting AI uptake and growth across the economy, with particular attention to AI in public administration, education and competitiveness.
  • The government is preparing to implement the EU AI Act: in February 2025 the Cabinet of Ministers considered an implementation report by the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development (VARAM) defining responsible institutions and necessary actions, and in December 2024 it approved a draft law to establish a Latvian National Centre for Artificial Intelligence (NMIC).
