Regulation Status

• Chile has no comprehensive, binding AI-specific law in force; it has an Interpretative Circular on Consumer Protection against AI systems (2023) and a risk-based AI bill progressing through Congress.
• Chile launched an updated National AI Policy and action plan in May 2024 following UNESCO's AI Readiness Assessment, and introduced the Bill regulating AI systems (Nr. 16821-19) to the Chamber of Deputies, applying a risk-based framework that classifies AI by risk level, bans unacceptable-risk systems and provides regulatory sandboxes.
• Chile is active internationally and regionally, signing the Cartagena Declaration on AI governance (2024) and the Paris Charter on AI (2025), leading the Latam-GPT project, and partnering with UNESCO via CENIA (2026) and with Brazil on a regional language model.
• The AI Bill was approved in general by the Chamber of Deputies in August 2025 after over two years of collaborative work, though technology and business groups (including the Santiago Chamber of Commerce, FinteChile and ALAI) wrote in July 2025 warning it could seriously hinder AI development and adoption.
